  • Dundee Hills

The Dundee Hills AVA sits roughly 28 miles southwest of Portland near Newberg, covering 6,940 acres of red Jory soil — volcanic silt, clay and loam that makes up about 80 percent of the appellation and gives the district its reddish ground. Vineyards climb from the 200-foot contour to a high point of 1,067 feet. It is the most concentrated tasting-room density closest to Portland, which makes it the default for a first wine tour or a half-day outing.

  • Chehalem Mountains and Ribbon Ridge

The Chehalem Mountains AVA is the closest major appellation to the city, about nineteen miles southwest, and at 68,265 acres it is also the largest in the north valley. Roughly 40 commercial wineries operate inside it. Bald Peak, northwest of Newberg, tops out at 1,633 feet and is the highest point in the Willamette Valley. Since 2020 the AVA has contained two sub-appellations, Ribbon Ridge and the Laurelwood District, so a single day inside the Chehalem Mountains can cover three distinct soil profiles without long drives between stops.

  • Columbia Gorge

The Columbia Gorge AVA runs about 60 miles east of Portland along I-84 and straddles the river into Washington, stretching forty miles eastward from the Cascades. Hood River is the hub and sits about an hour from the city. The Gorge is the most dramatic drive of any wine tour we run and the most climatically varied — the western end gets around 36 inches of rain a year while the eastern end is high desert at roughly 10 inches, so the varieties change noticeably as you move east. Plan a full day for this one.

  • Eola-Amity Hills, Tualatin Hills, and Carlton

South toward Salem, the Eola-Amity Hills catch wind through the Van Duzer Corridor. West of Beaverton and Hillsboro, the Tualatin Hills sit in the valley's northwest corner. Carlton is a walkable tasting-room town that works well when you want fewer miles between stops. Any of these can be combined with a Dundee Hills run in a single day.

  • Which vehicle, and where open alcohol is allowed

This is the question that decides most wine tour bookings, so here it is plainly.

Open alcohol is permitted in our Mercedes Sprinter vans, which seat up to 14 and have a partition between the driver's compartment and the passenger cabin. It is not permitted in our executive sedans or luxury SUVs. Guests bring their own — we do not sell or provide alcohol on board.

That makes the Sprinter the right call for any group that wants to open a bottle they just bought, and it is the reason most wine tour groups of six or more book one. Sedans and SUVs are the better choice for couples and small groups who are tasting at the wineries rather than in transit.

Group size drives the rest of it. Two to three people fit an executive sedan comfortably with room for cases. Four to six work in a luxury SUV. Seven to fourteen need the Sprinter, which also has the cargo room for a day of buying.

Everyone gets dropped where they were picked up.

We operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so early departures for a full Gorge day and late returns from a long valley afternoon are both normal.

Taking the wine home

A serious day of tasting across four or five producers, with a group of six or more, routinely produces more cases than anyone expected to carry. Rideshare cannot help you with this and neither can a compact sedan. The Sprinter's cargo room exists precisely for the end of the day, and cases travel in the vehicle rather than on laps or between feet.

Three practical notes. Cases stay upright and out of direct sun for the drive home, which matters more in August than in February. If you are picking up wine club allocations, that stock is usually held at the winery and needs collecting in person, so mention it to your chauffeur when you build the route rather than after the last stop. And if you are shipping rather than carrying, the winery handles it, not us.

Choosing the vehicle by group size

Two or three passengers fit an executive sedan comfortably with room for a case or two behind them.

Four to six work in a luxury SUV, with cargo space for a moderate day of buying.

Seven to fourteen need a Mercedes Sprinter van, which is also the only vehicle where open alcohol is permitted and the only one built for a full day of case buying by a large group.

Enter your passenger count in the online quote and the appropriate vehicle comes back automatically, with the total, before you commit to anything.
